Well, the year I came here IU had the best retention rate in the Big 10 and was ranked the number one teaching school among research universities by US News & World Report. We have got more retention programs than you can shake a stick at. We got free math tutoring, free computer classes, free writing tutors, organized mentoring.

My gripe is that what I hear from Indian students is they don't want to come where there are not already a lot of Indian students so the problem becomes how do you reach critical mass? I am not even sure what critical mass would be, but I doubt that there are 50 Indian students on the campus. Approximately 90 checked "Native American" on their enrollment forms, but when we spam e-mailed them to invite them to the first meeting of the Indian Students Assn it caused a big stink....they were mostly Bruce Springsteen Natives: "Born in the USA."

Seems to me with so few students and only two indian faculty Wesley and I can pay more attention to the ones we have.

Also, I am not so quick to condemn low retention rates at good schools. What those rates may indicate is that they are giving chances to guys like me, with no high school transcript and no test scores. In Texas, it may be the effect of that 10% rule: everybody in the top 10% of their Texas high school class can get into UT. Which does not mean they are qualified, but I say go ahead and give them a shot. Having had my shot, it would be hypocritical to deny anyone else.

Steve
