While I am supportive of students retaining their culture, I am not sure what use I can be in accomplishing that other than to reinforce that it is all right.

I have one Cherokee student here. He is fluent....in Navajo, because he was raised on the Navajo Rez. He is an interesting cross-cultural pollination.

We were offered a contract to write a book together on Cherokee philosophy, but that idea is hanging fire because I was supposed to go to Tahlequah to ask permission from elders this summer and my knees gave out so I could not travel...not to mention I would feel weird at the stomp dances.

Anyhow, I'm not sure how I can make a non-Cherokee comfortable in their culture. Cherokees are some of the greatest cultural chameleons on the face of the planet without any help....we are used to blending in when necessary and reverting when we can.

Steve
