It may be a case of being the advocate for the student when culture and classes clash - or helping the student find a way around a old mossback prof who will not listen. I go to a lot of dicipline hearings with my students and teacher/partent conferences with the family. Don't guess those are very common in academecia though.

It may be just a case of running interference for the students. One common complaint is that our students have to explain their culture over and over and over and over.

I formed a study group in grad school. At every meeting I found it necessary to explain where I was coming from. Now the others liked hearing it - Skins are In - but it sure got old doing that.

Sometimes one of us has to take the heat or pressure so that the student can quietly blend in and be left alone if that is what they want.
