Congrats.

FWIW, I've been teaching some strange stuff this summer--gifted minority high school kids the first half and freshmen now, same material.

With a couple of exceptions, the gifted high school kids write as well as the freshmen, and one of them was a truly outstanding writer, one of the best I've ever taught.

The freshmen really come better prepared than some of the juniors and seniors I spend most of my time with.

I've been pretty lucky this summer, but the hardest thing about teaching the younger ones is figuring out exactly where they are. Small classes helped that.

Your report brings one thing to my mind your freshman child probably doesn't know: some teachers are as nervous as the kids at the beginning. I know I am.

Steve
