Thank you so much for your concern. I see we posted at the exact same time -- musta been riding that same train of thought.

The protest had nothing to do with my husband losing his job. We suspected something was up because he worked in the field (well, not literally) and very rarely went into the office. In the 12 yrs he'd been there, they'd never INSISTED that he meet with them.

He installed, programmed, and maintained business phone systems for various companies. The year 2000 had a great impact with a LOT of work to be done -- his employer hired a lot of apprentices. The work has died down now, and the employer has chosen to keep the apprentices (at lower pay) and get rid of the technicians who had been there the longest (with the highest pay).

In a way, I'm kind of glad this happened. His job was SO stressful (businesses owners aren't very happy when their phones are down). Seemed like he spent his entire day getting yelled at, then fighting traffic. They had him traveling from near the border of Wisconsin all the way down to Springfield.

He injured a disc in his back and can hardly walk now (we TOLD him not to shovel that snow). He may require surgery, so this time off might be a good thing for him.

We talked about the online service, and he says we're going to hold off as long as possible. I can't afford to lose my connection to the doctors in Finland. I'm the contact person for anyone in the States who might have this (we're up to 6 ppl now in the USA). It's important for me to be there for these people because doctors in the US are completely ignorant of this disease. I also help people newly diagnosed with primary amyloidosis find the right treatment center and help -- most docs think this is an "old person's disease" and don't know effective treatment is available. Oh, and I need it for myself, in case of any breakthrough in Finland.

Sniff, so this means I'm going to have to give up my cigarettes and he's going to have to drastically cut down on the beer (or give it up). I KNEW I shouldn't have said "I'll never give up smoking." Oh well, as they say -- "man plans, God laughs."

Yikes, I'm talkative this morning!

Kathy
