I am enrolled Cherokee, born Stephen Teehee. My namesake was Deputy Chief and also a District Judge. A collateral relative is Houston B. Teehee, who represented the Cherokee Nation during part of the litigation over the Cherokee Strip.

However, my Cherokee father was a roughneck in the Oklahoma oil fields and nobody in my immediate family, including me, finished high school.

I was raised by my grandparents in Bristow, Oklahoma. Joined the Air Force in 1964, and they took me because it was wartime.

The GI Bill and some fast talking got me into the University of Texas at Austin in 1969. I graduated magna cum laude in 1972, but nobody in Texas would hire a teacher with a beard so I went to law school.

Ran a losing judicial campaign; worked for the United Farm Workers and the best known civil right firm in Austin and then was appointed a judge on the Austin Municipal Court. Did that for five years and then got elected to the Travis County Court at Law where I served for 12 years.

I've been married three times. First wife decided she was a Lesbian and left me after 9 years. Second wife died after 10 years. Still married to Tracy, the first non-intellectual woman I ever had a serious relationship with.

Four kids. Mykol is married to Robin and has a daughter, Indigo. They live in Seattle where he teaches music at his alma mater, Cornish University, and Robin is a fashion designer.

Mary is a computer nerd living in Round Rock, Texas, with husband Bruce and kids Benjamin and Olivia.

Paul got out of the Army in September and has been unemployed in Austin since and I am greatly worried about him. He is married to Michele and has three kids, Tessa, Austin, and Sebastian.

Beth is a graduate of St. Edward's University and a flight attendant for Delta. She is getting married Sept. 13 to Bill, who is a recent grad of SMU Law School currently serving a judical clerkship.

I left the active Bench Jan. 1, 1995, and started teaching criminal justice at the University of Texas-San Antonio. I was not paid very well or treated very well there, but in the very year I was seriously hunting for a legal job, I got recruited by Indiana University.

Now I live in Bloomington and I have the best job I've ever had in my life.

Tracy and I each brought two dogs to the marriage and all four dogs are getting very elderly and unwell. I expect within two years I will have no dogs, and I'm very sad about that because they are all four my very good friends.

Other than my ailing dogs, my unemployed son, and my loony warmongering President, life is good.

Steve
