I'm not sure Christianity started off that way, but certainly nations that have embraced it and used it as "bloody and oppressive". I think one of the primary problems with those committed to what they see as Christian ethics is their often held belief that they have a right to inflict those on others, that it is the chosen or "right" religion. I honestly think that for all the good Christianity has done, twice as much bad as also been done by those purporting to be acting within the Christian faith.

Christian religion has really been responsible for much oppression over centuries, I don't think there is much doubt about that.
