H, Maria and Catalina. Chaplin's childhood was both happy and sad. He was from south side of London and his parents were both music hall singers. However, his father was an alcoholic and deserted the family when Charlie was very small and Charlie only saw him rarely after that. His father died when Charlie was 12. His mother was very devoted to her sons (Charlie and older brother Sydney) but suffered from mental illness and often had to be placed in institutions. Even when she was well she wasn't able to work much and so the family suffered both ups and downs financially -- more down than up. At times Charlie lived on the streets or was placed in an orphanage. The happiest periods of Charlie's early life were when his mother was home and he could be with her and Syd. What he experienced during his childhood greatly influenced the settings and themes of his films and the personality of The Little Tramp.

A really terrific source for finding out a lot more about Chaplin's life is David Robinson's biography Chaplin: His Life and Art. This book is sure to be in your local library and is still in print, if you're interested in purchasing a copy for yourself.

Good luck on your school assignment!
