Wayne-Can commisserate with your nervousness and also can identify with your great memories of the e34 M5. I had one of those and a few of the e28 M5 as well. Hang in there...We're going to get some satisfaction the easy way or the hard way, whichever it takes. May I suggest that you investigate an oil testing lab down under, similar to Blackstone Labs here in the U.S. Checking for the presence (or, hopefully, absence) of lead will determine the condition of the bearings. 4 or 5 ppm is normal. It won't get you off the hook but at least it'll give you a little peace of mind for a while.
