India have no confidence at the moment, that is their main problem. (plus not sticking to a settled batting line up - Sehwag has to open)

Why do India have no confidence. Answer: The West Indies, by no means a great one day side, expose their lack of bowling depth in their own back yard, then they have to bat on some admitedly shocking wickets in New Zealand where none the less a very ordinary NZ seam attack (Bond excluded) completely over shadow both their theory on stacking the batting line up and their quite abysmal seam attack. The pressure put on the batsmen (batting first) to make 290 - 300 plus is exceptional and is having adverse effects on a very talented batting line up.

It is pretty close to the ODI line up that took England apart in the summer.

It is almost identical but even then the problems were clear. England's decent batting line up sent their attack all over the park to post 320plus in the final. Hussain, widely recognised as at best a limited ODI batsman even notched a ton. Yes they chased the target well and it was an exceptional win but that series pointed out some very clear problems to them and they were ignored. They cannot virtually ignore the bowling and always expect their talented batsmen to pull them out of trouble.

Kumble was their best bowler against the Aussies but he is the one you would have dropped for the not good enough Agarker.

Don't get me wrong Kumble along with Singh are their best bowlers and I'm no Agarker fan, yet they have to recognise that they simply will not win this world cup, or were ever going to, using only 20 overs of good quality seam. Anyway the pressure was hardly on the Aussies to go after Kumble, who they have punished several times in the past.

Dravid's wicket-keeping is certainly exposed by the Indian spinners more than their pace attack. It looks to me as if you would would be playing only one specialist spinner AND removing Dravid from wicket-keeping - surely one or the other is the answer- Patel for Kaif definitely weakens the team IMHO.

Dravid's wicket keeping would be exposed by my mum bowling. He is completely incompetent against the spinners and at best poor when keeping to the seamers. It is like when England shifted Trecothick to the gloves for the last 3 ODI's in NZ. Two wins hid over his glaring shortcomings for a while but can you honestly argue he is an international class keeper. The same goes for Dravid. I realise that the Indian team I suggested was a bit controversial but the point I was trying to make is that India are chucking all their eggs in the same basket, ie that the batsmen will chase anything. Bit of a problem when you have to bat first.

Presumably India are so poor that England will breeze past them when they meet - I doubt it.

So do I but that is hardly the point. India are a really talented team who I would like to have seen do well. They have worked so hard on their fielding and are now a very much improved unit. However the complete lack of flexiblilty in their team selection is letting the down. For the record I think England will beat them, but in reality the result between the two will prove little else than whose preperations have been the least inept.

PS Just because Pool A has become a farce doesn't mean any bets associated with that pool do not stand!

The bet still stands, and the perverse individual that I am I still fancy England to qualify. Lets face it though, only one team out of this group is of a standard that even approches the title of world champions.

PPS Nice to see your mate Nasser 'exclusively' revealing in his newspaper column today which of his players were in tears over the decision-making re Zimbabwe. Should some of the named players feel aggrieved by the actions of their leader, a man in authority, presumably they can go and jab him in the chest a few times in a public place - after all that now appears to be acceptable behaviour. By making money out of this incident, he and England have yet again shown why, unlike A Flower and Olonga, they have no moral superiority on this issue. I have said it before and I will say it again, I think it is completely wrong for the captain of England to reveal private things not in the public domain to the one newspaper he gets paid by. He is paid to be captain of England and that should include open and frank discussions with the entire spoken and written word media on equal terms. No doubt you disagree though because Hussan can of course do no wrong.

To your eternal suprise I agree with you 100%. I think is unacceptable that any Captain of any nation has an exclusive column with any media outlet, no matter what the sport. I have always been suprised that the ECB has let this situation stand and I think Nasser has better things to do than blab to some right wing pamphlet about issues concerning his players and the team.
The actions of Olonga and Flower should be commended, though the ICC's ruling that although they are not to be punished for wearing armbands they should cease to wear them is typical of the way this tournamnet is being run. The image of a united Africa where everyone enjoys two months of seeing pub teams being pulverised by top class sportsmen while picking flowers and whistling happy tunes is as corupt as Mugabi's regieme. 210 cricketers are being used as a PR tool by the ICC and the tournament sponsers. They have a reason to feel let down.
