Subject: england nasser etc

Three big decisions went englands way plus they were playing on an english-type wicket and still they lost.

Firstly, the decisions :

Flintoff edged one to Gilchrist early in his innings : NOT OUT

Martyn got an inside edge to a ball from Caddick which was also going over the top : OUT

Hogg did not touch the ball : OUT

Secondly, the positives :

Flintoff looks like he has finally matured and is beginning to show the form he is capable of

White put the ball in the right places

The negatives :

1 Why oh why when it was clear to everyone that Anderson was bricking it big time, did Nasser bowl Anderson rather than bowling out his most experienced bowler (Caddick). Having let Anderson bowl and be carted and probably blame himself for the loss, no England player consoled him or pepped him up after the over. Well done guys.

2 Body language - England looked beat for most of the game and even Nassers sunday column was a litany of pre-match excuses, bleating and whingeing rather than a patriotic call to arms.

3 Despite (1), Caddick is being acclaimed yet again for a bgreat performance. I, and I am sure Andy, JT, etc, [Jase already does!] would love to get wickets with the tosh he bowled. It was a day for pitching it up and he got 3 wickets with short balls that the complacent Aussies didn't put away properly and one lbw that was never out. This on top of 3-69 against the Indians when the three wickets all came in the lsat over and were meaningless.

The outcome :

England still have a good chance of qualifying but I can rarely recall a more insular wounded group of England players. Last night I saw TV pictures when Nas and Tresco were getting on the team bus and a couple of voices among the england supporters shouted 'Disgraceful, Nasser'. Hussain ignored them with his usual sullen disdain but Tresco gave them a long stare and shook his head, instantly counting him out of the England captaincy in my eyes (if the poor results when he has captained were not evidence enough)

I do think that Englands preparation for this World Cup has been woeful and that they are better than they have showed in this tournament but how many good performances have they put in. If you accept the lights argument (which i do not) then Englands victory over Pakistan must only have been due to winning the toss and they hardly crushed Namibia and Holland.
