Subject: dim lcd

i have a dell inspiron 3200, when u turn on the laptop, the lcd is dim-you can still see something if u look hard. but when u hook it up to an external monitor, everything is ok.
iwas thinking of replacing the lcd, but i was advised that it might be just the backlight or lcd inverter(what is the difference). if it is just those can i do it on my own,due to cash restriction.
can u tell/show me how to do it
