Subject: sony laptop screen flickers on and off when set bright

My Sony pcg-fx410 laptop screen flickers on and off. If it goes out completly I can still see very faint black image. Works fine if hooked to external monitor. Also it doesnt flicker if I turn brightness down but soon as i turn brightness up it flickes alot. Is problem lcd backlight inverter...can I fix it myself and avoid sonys repair shop.
