Subject: thinkpad stuck in standby mode

My Thinkpad 1400i laptop is stuck in standby mode. The display is blank (black), and the indicators show 1)bat, 2)standby, and 3)power. I've removed the battery for 24 hours but as soon as I reinsert it and hit the power on button, the computer goes immediately to standby.
I've burned a Win98 boot disk and tried that but it doesn't affect it. Same with a boot floppy.
I've hit the Fn button alone and in combination with the other 'blue' keys with no change in status. I've hit F2 at power on, cntl at power on, etc. all with no change.

How can I FORCE a boot from floppy or CD rom, or get out of standby??
