For rockfishing I usually use Maxima. It seems to be low stretch and fairly abrasion resistant. Usually I would suggest no less that 20#.
Another way to go is to use spectra ( Izorline, Power Pro, Spyderwire, etc...) then use about 20' of mono. The only problem I could see happening with the spectra is that if you get snagged it might be difficult to break free causing some instability in your kayak while trying to break the spectra loose. The mono leader would be easier to break off.
