"She's had the baby?! How is she? How's the baby? Is it a boy or a girl? I can't believe it! Why didn't anyone alert us... we could have assisted!!" Eyes wide with surprise and delight, Colleen, still smiling, grimaced, as she stepped aside and added, "I'm sorry, Brian, please come in. Gosh, you look so tired!"
Doffing his hat, Brian wearily stepped inside. Nodding politely in Andrew's direction, Brian's eyes held a measure of appreciation to his brother-in-law for his restraint in further questions. Truth be told, though by his outward appearance it was obvious, Brian was not only too tired to go into any long explanation, more importantly, the harsh details of his participation in Anne's labour were too recent. He'd hardly had time to process all that they had went through... especially Anne. He turned to face both puzzled faces, murmuring softly,

"They're both fine now. It was touch an' go, though. There jus' wasn't any time to come an' get ya both. Ma was gonna send Sully over here, but things got bad real quick an' we all had to focus on savin' the lives of Anne and her baby... girl."

"Oh, thank God they're alright! I can't imagine... no, I'm not even going to go there. Anne and... have they named their baby yet?"

"Emily Elizabeth." Yawned, Brian.

"Emily," Smiled Colleen, finishing, "Anne and Emily are going to pull through. Matthew must be relieved... and elated, to say the least."

"Mmm-hmm." Brian answered, eyelids drooping as he sank into one of the chairs.

Placing action into Colleen's thoughts, Andrew was already headed to the barn to hitch the wagon. They would be with their family and the newest extension within the hour. Colleen could think of nowhere in the world she'd rather be. A deep frown cast a shadow over Colleen's bright countenance as she imagined the pain and danger Anne and her baby were in last night and into the early morning hours. Herself and Andrew never had a clue as to what was going on... remained oblivious and isolated from the trauma.

"Brian, you rest here. Take all the time you need..."

"No, Colleen, I'm comin' back with you an' Andrew..."

Colleen giggled as she watched Brian's head wobble like a rooster's as he valiantly tried to stay awake.

"Are you sure? You might fall asleep in your saddle."

"Naa, Colleen... if I can get through what I... we did... last night, then I reckon I can make the trip back to Matthew and Anne's place jus' fine. Don'tcha worry 'bout me, big Sis."

Colleen's eyebrows raised in appreciation. Shaking her head, her lips formed a small grin. Sometimes it seemed so impossible to her that Brian was a young man now. Gone were the days when he was a small boy, spending many of his hours upon one of Mr. Bray's chairs, short legs dangling, with a favored lollypop happily disappearing in his mouth.

The sound of the wagon nearing the porch brought her out of her reverie and awoke a snoozing Brian. Smiling brightly, Colleen grabbed her coat and medical bag as she imagined baby Emily five years down the road, sitting with Mr. Bray, munching on a prized candy... a carbon copy of her uncle Brian, when he was her age, much to the delight of the storekeeper. Shaking away her thoughts, Colleen, once again, came back to the present... so many memories...

"Let's go, Brian! I can't wait to meet my new niece!"

Matthew and Anne stared down in awe at the tiny form that lay asleep in her mother’s arms. Anne lightly ran a finger over Emily’s tiny hand and sighed happily. At her mother’s touch, the baby began making sucking motions with her mouth, stirred, but didn’t wake.
“I can’ believe she’s finally here,” Matthew said softly, caressing Emily’s cheek.

“I know it all seems so unreal. I’ve wondered for nine months whether the baby would be a girl or a boy and now that she’s here I just feel so amazed that she was the one inside me kickin’ an’ movin’ all around.” Anne snuggled the baby closer to her and kissed her light blonde fuzzy head.

Matthew shook his head in disbelief, “God Anne, we’re parents,” he looked at her with wide blue eyes and felt a rush of panic run through him.

Anne laughed and patted him on the shoulder with her free hand, “Well, ya know that being parents sort of happens when ya have baby,” she said lightly.

“I know, I know, it just all sorta hit me. We’re responsible for makin’ sure she grows up alright and that she’s safe an’ happy,” he said in a rush of words.

“Whoa, slow down honey,” she said, handing their daughter over to him.

“She’s dependent on us for everythin’ Anne, doesn’t that scare ya?” Matthew said looking down at his little girl.

“It scares me to death Matthew, but we’re goin’ to be fine. Besides we’ll have lots of help whenever we have any questions.”

As if on cue, there was a soft knock on the door and Michaela peeked her head into the door. “Are you two up for a little company?” she asked, opening the door wider to reveal Katie, standing shyly by her mother’s side.

A grin spread across Matthew’s face at the sight of his little sister, “Sure we are. C’mere Kates and meet yer niece.” Matthew’s doubts about being a father were replaced with feelings of pride and joy at showing his daughter off.

Katie ran over to the side of the bed and looked at the tiny bundle in Matthew’s arms. She cocked her head to the side and smiled. “She’s so tiny!” she exclaimed softly.

“Would you like to hold her?” asked Anne.

Katie stood openmouthed and looked from Anne to Matthew to the baby, “Can I?” she asked in a whisper.

Anne smiled and held out her hand, inviting Katie up on the bed.

“Careful Katie,” Michaela warned from the doorway.

“I will Mama,” said Katie as she climbed gingerly between Anne and Matthew.

“Ya know, we’re all real grateful for what ya did yesterday Katie. You were real brave,” said Matthew as he placed Emily in Katie’s awaiting arms.

Katie blushed happily, “I wasn’ sure if I could do it, but I knew I had ta try. Mama says her name is Emily Elizabeth.”

“That’s right, what do you think of it?” asked Anne.

“I like it. We both got the same middle name, jus’ like Grandma’s name. Hi Emily, I’m Katie. I’m gonna help your mama an’ papa take care o’ ya like they help take care o’ me. I’ll teach ya all sorts of things when ya get bigger. I know how to ride horsies all by myself an’ I know how get mean boys like Willy Ames ta leave ya alone.” Katie stopped there and looked at her mother, smiled sheepishly and whispered to Emily, “I’ll tell ya ‘bout that later. Mama didn’ like what I did to him, ‘though he deserved it.”

Katie kissed the baby on her head and rested her cheek gently against the baby’s. “We’re gonna be great friends you an’ me Emily, jus’ you wait an’ see.”
