Subject: Re: Studs, Texas -book two- Back at the hospital
In reply to: Sue 's message, "Re: Studs, Texas -book two- and even more angst if you can handle it." on 01:13:21 01/04/03 Sat

"Where is she, Shane?" Rob demanded as he pushed his way into the fray of activity outside Randy's hospital room.

"Is she okay? Can we see her?" Sunny echoed, following at Rob's heels.

Shane took a deep breath and sighed, feeling more like a traffic cop than the town sheriff. All evening he'd done nothing but answer the question "Where is she?" while Andy and CeCe were out investigating the specifics of Randy's accident. He felt utterly useless.

But Val had arranged a small command post there at the hospital…convinced Shane that it would be the best way for him to monitor all aspects of the investigation. It was an obvious ploy to give him time to recuperate from his injuries and, any other night, Shane would have fervently disagreed, but, somehow, being there if Nick needed him just felt like the right thing for a friend to do.

The fact that half of Studs seemed to be coming through the hospital door, one by one, just made Shane's job a whole lot easier.

"Rob, I'm gonna need to see the repair records on the Camaro…" Quickly, Shane got down to business.

But Rob practically bit Shane's head off at the accusation. "There was NOTHING wrong with the damned car!" he shouted. "You think I'd let Randy anywhere near it if there was?"

The agony Rob was going through was written all over his face. In Rob's eyes, Shane saw a man who would blame himself forever, no matter what the investigation proved.

"Shane…" Suddenly, Rob's voice was soft, penitent even. He needed answers more than he needed to pick a fight. They weren't Sheriff and rock star any longer. They were two old friends, hurting and scared.

"Please…" Rob begged for the smallest detail.

"She's in a coma, but she's stable," Shane complied charitably. "Sully operated to relieve the pressure on her brain. He's examining her right now, as a matter of fact."

"And Nick?" Sunny was almost afraid to ask.

"Sully kicked him out, told him to get something to eat, but he's gone down to check on Teddy instead," Shane answered.

"Teddy?" Sunny and Rob both questioned him in unison.

"Uhhh…Nick and Teddy had a…difference of opinion…and Teddy's heart didn't much approve," Shane commented wryly.

Rob brushed his hand nervously through his hair. There was just too much bad news coming at him too fast. Even worse, Rob sensed Shane still had more to tell.

"Difference of opinion about what…exactly?" he pressed.

Shane moved closer to Rob and Sunny, lowering his voice, hoping to avoid the publicity Randy's accident was sure to generate before the day was out.

"Randy's pregnant," Shane whispered softly.

"Oh, God…" Distraught, Sunny covered her gasp with her hands. Poor Randy just couldn't go through this tragedy again, she just couldn't.

"Damn…" Rob swore under his breath and began pacing again, more furiously than before.

"The baby?" Sunny couldn't hold back the tears in her eyes.

"So far, so good," Shane assured them. "Nick's kid, after all…stubborn as hell…" he smiled half-heartedly.

"I have to see her…" Rob insisted.

Shane knew better than to object. "If Sully'll let you…"

"Go on…" Sunny nodded in reply, before Rob could even ask.

As much as Sunny wanted to see Randy, she knew that Rob needed a little time alone.

"I'll be right here…" She reached out to take Rob's hand gently in hers.

All their squabbling seemed so distant now, so unimportant compared to what was at stake for Randy and Nick.

"Give her my love," Sunny said softly, watching as Rob took the time he needed to compose himself.

Back straight, eyes focused, Rob looked even taller and more formidable than usual, and Sunny smiled wanly. The man she loved was about to give the finest acting performance of his career. Still, for all his efforts, there was nothing but fear in Rob's eyes. Sunny saw it and so did Shane.

"Why don't we get some coffee…" Shane suggested, placing his arm around Sunny and turning her toward the vending machines, diverting her attention away from Rob.

"Uh…sure…" Sunny agreed reluctantly, not noticing the backward glance of support Shane offered his old friend or the grateful nod Rob gave him in return before taking a last deep breath and venturing quietly into Randy's room.
