From CCCook:

Jerry and Chantal had gone straight to the Texaroo Ranch. They decided to take the walking tour of the animal exhibits. Although it was a hot, dry, Texas day, many of the animals had been quite accomodating early on, and they were able to take some very good pictures. Jerry showed Chantal a few technical tips, and how to use a digital camera properly. Photography had always been a hobby, and occasionally a side business for Jerry, and he was thrilled that Chantal had taken such an interest in it, particularly since Paul never had. Chantal loved spending time with her grandfather. He was quite easygoing with her, and never did anything to embarrass her, like her dad usually did. Then again, Chantal's behaviour was nearly always perfect when she was out with any of her grandparents, so there was no reason to embarrass her.

"Thanks for taking me out to the roo ranch, Grandpa! I was gonna freak if I had to stay and listen to Mamere and Nana for another minute!"

"Precisely why we're here, Chantal! I couldn't stand it either! I hope your dad and uncle got out while they could!"

Chantal laughed. "If they didn't, they're still in there...and I feel sorry for the kitties!"

Jerry smiled. "Once your grandmothers get used to the idea, they'll be just fine. So tell me, are you all right with this? Our visit seems to have turned into something else entirely."

"Are you kidding?" Chantal squealed. "I am so glad you're all here!" She sweetly hugged Jerry as they walked side by side.

A bit later, Kieran went out to the ranch with Phil and Lily as they took a quick look at all the goings on. At least once a week, in addition to daily office and hands-on ranch duties he'd assigned himself, Phil planned to randomly visit the staff of the various sections, in order to stay aware and accessible. That way, if there were any problems, they could be dealt with before they got too big.

"This summer, we'll find you something to do around here, Kieran, I'm sure you don't want to lie about for three months, do you?" Phil said.

"Right. I can be a tour guide or muck out after some kangaroo or something. Fun." Kieran replied. It wasn't the first time either Phil or Lily had mentioned the dreaded summer job to him.

"What if I have to go to summer school? I wouldn't be able to work then, would I?" Kieran tried, but it was no good.

"Then I suppose you'll just have *two* summer jobs, won't he, Phil?" Lily said.

"No. He'll have three. Maybe four. He'll need the extra work here to stay focused, won't he, Lil?" Phil responded.

Before Kieran had a chance to snap back, Lily called. "Oh look, it's Chantal and her grandfather!"

The Cravens met Chantal and Jerry and got to talking. Always one to be prepared, Jerry had an abbreviated portfolio of some of his work in his camera bag, and soon he and Phil were discussing a photographic assignment that could turn into a staff position. They decided to discuss the matter further over lunch at the nearest snack bar. While Jerry talked business with Phil and Lily, Kieran and Chantal got their lunch and sat at another table...as far away from the adults as possible.

*************
Kieran and Chantal had gotten into a conversation about their families, and the fact that they'd both lost parents. In spite of that, they both felt very lucky to be in the situations they're in, but that didn't stop them from complaining about the parents they do have.

"Well, yeah, it sucks to be orphaned, or half-orphaned, or whatever you
wanna call it..." Kieran remarked. "...but at least you don't have to watch them all over each other 24/7! Phil and Lily are pretty normal about it, even if it *is* disgusting, but they don't mess around on each other...not like my mom and her boyfriends did!"

"Ick. Yeah...I'm lucky that way." Chantal replied. "And my dad doesn't really date. I think he almost had a girlfriend when we lived in Seattle, but she didn't like me, so he dumped her."

"What about Miss Zapata? She likes you!" Kieran teased. "My aunt's been trying to get her together with your dad, you know, and I think it's working! I heard them talking about ton pere yesterday...and Carrie-kins was blushing! She was turning like a zillion shades of red...matched her lipstick..."

"I'm gonna kick your ass, Craven! That is NOT happening!"

"It's true! Next time your dad and Miss Zapata are together, just watch! Paul and Carol sitting in a tree...K-I- Ow!" One of Chantal's french fries hit Kieran in the face, narrowly missing his eye.

"Stop being so immature, Kieran!" Chantal hissed.

"And throwing food at me because you can't take the truth is real mature. Yeah, right!" Kieran answered.

"Let's talk about something else, OK?!" Chantal whispered. "I saw your aunt looking at us funny."

"OK...we'll talk about something else!" Kieran agreed, glancing over at Lily, who quickly looked in the other direction. "But don't come bitching to me when it happens!"

"Shut up. I don't care anyway." Chantal lied. They quietly finished their lunch.
