Subject: ICE BOX

I just purchased a mariner 31 at auction so I have no info on it. In looking at the ice box, I find no drain. Is this standard and how does one get melted ice out?

Mine is in the left, forward corner.
I only use it for dry storage, poor insulation.
I put an Engel 12v/110v cooler on the boat. Small but works well.

I installed additional 2" rigid insulation board on entire interior of ice box, fiberglass-ed over and painted with white LPU paint. I thin installed an icebox conversion kit http://www.wmjmarine.com/nor-scqt4407.html, which works great. I have twin solar panels mounted on the stern pulpit which provide enough juice to power the compressor. With the added insulation, the compressor only runs about 1/4 of the time.I also added two drains - one in the galley refer, and one in the cockpit refer. I used 1" drains with hoses, and tied the two drain hoses together, then discharged into the bilge. I have dual bilge pumps, one for backup with the float switch set higher than the primary. That sounds good about the ice box conversion. On the 2" rigid insulation board, where did you get it? Is there a specific type or brand? Was it expensive? What would you think about doubling it on the engine side? How hard was it to fiberglass?

Hey Brian,
Sorry, I have been on Holiday in Portugal. I bought 2" thisck Styrofoam rigid insulation from Home Depot. No particular brand name. I simple used a hand saw to cut and shape it. I used Sikka-flex marine sealant to glue it to the stainless steel. It was inexpensive and easy to work with. I used TAP Plastics x-mat fiberglass roving cloth and West Systems Epoxy to glass in the foam, and after the epoxy kicked, I used west Systems Fairing powder mixed in the epoxy, and after sanding smooth, I painted everything with Perfection LPU epoxy primer and topcoat paint. I also installed new 1-1/4" drain fittings for both galley and cockpit coolers. Let me know if you want pictures. It is an easy installation (but somewhat tedious due to the various steps)

When I had my 32 I just used one of those plastic hand bilge pumps to pump the melt water into a bucket or into the cockpit. Cheap but effective.
