I am trying to picture a helm shaft and can't come up with anything on my Mariner - are you talking about the tube that comes up through the bottom in which the rudder post sits?

The bronze shaft attached to the wheel on one end and the worm gear on the other.

Maybe I'm nuts, but in the sales brochure, it seems longer, so I just wondered if there were variations.
