Subject: Has anyone heard from Dan?

I was just wondering if anyone had heard from Dan about the key blanks. I sent him a couple of emails but I haven't heard anything back.

I have not heard anything either. FYI jared, I never heard back from Hori, so went with a different lock system. I used a traditional bronze haspe and marine combo lock - unfortunately. I would have loved to have the original Hori lock, but wasn't able to make that happen. Good luck.

Bummer. I'm going to see if I can get one of my brother's friends in Tokyo back on the case. I've had a bronze hasp on mine since I got it but the previous owner installed the long floppy part of the hasp on the hatch and the small part on the board. With this configuration, I occasionally get stuck inside when the hasp flops down over the other part. Of course, I can fix it by just reversing those two pieces but I'd much rather have the original lock working.

Good idea. I actually called Hori Locks on the telephone once, and made some progress, but then the language barrier became an issue. If your brother has friends who speak Japanese, I believe you will be sucessful in getting someone fromthe factory on the phone who can help you.

My company has a Tokyo office and I'm fairly close with a couple of the people there whose English is good and Japanese, native.

If our task for them was a simple one and not too time consuming, I'd be happy to ask for their assistance.

Oh man. This is a never ending quest. Here's what I got back from my friend in Tokyo:

"I got the answer I was expecting, they won't sell blanks for security reasons. They did say they would cut you one and send that to us. They said they knew what the cut would be, crazy. It's about $10 per key. Do you want to try one?"

Here's what I sent in reply:

"Hmm. I had intended to get 4 for me and 4 for a couple of other people that also have Mariners. I definitely want four of them for me and if they're already cut for my lock, that's even better. Do you know how they know how to cut the key? If all Mariners had the same key, then I'd like 8 of them. If they know from the number on the lock (visible in one of the pictures of the lock), then I'd like 4 for me and I'll tell the others to send the numbers from their locks. If they know because of the picture of the key, then we have a problem because that's not my key. I don't have a key at all. That's a picture of someone else's key.

Sorry this is such a pain in the butt. It's really weird that they won't sell blanks. You can walk into any hardware store here and buy all kinds key blanks for houses and cars and all kinds of stuff. Besides, you can't open anything with a key blank. I went to a locksmith here in SB and they said that if I could get key blanks, they could cut them to work with my lock.

Anyway, thanks again. Please let me know what the deal is with how they determined how to cut the key and hopefully we can get this resolved."

So that's the saga so far. I'll let you know when there are further developments.

-Jared

Hey Jared,

Thanks for the update. I'd still like one or two and am happy to pay the "upcharge". :)

I only have one key, however, and am not willing to send it to Japan as a pattern. Hope they can use the number.

Thanks again,

RR

In cleaning up the boat, I found the spare key.
Ace Hardware, stamped SC1, and Taiwan.
Maybe made at a Japanese "Ace Hardware"?
