Subject: Gel Coat?

Do our boats have gel coat? Upon sanding away layer after layer of old ablative, I was surprised to find a thin layer of what could be barrier coat (orange) under another thin layer of light blue - could be bottom paint - but under those two layers all I find (when the scraper digs) is glass mat or roving....

Anyone?

Hey Paul, My M31 has gel all the way, check out some of the pics of the factory on this site. I sand blasted mine back in the mid 80's and applied epoxy. At the time I was working in a boat yard and some folks were skinning the gel off before applying a barrier coat. So maybe that's what happened in your case. Should be good to go though if the barrier coat is left in tack.

I do recall seeing gelcoat in the factory pics. Whatever paint it is on there now, it is sound and hard, and there are no blisters, anywhere...

I am thinking of leaving it alone and putting a couple of layers of fresh bottom paint on there.
