Subject: Cutlass Bearing

Has anyone replaced their cutlass bearing on their M31/32? I need to do that and was wondering if their were any potential issues I should look for or be aware of? What manufacturer/model of cutlass bearing did you use?

Hi Bruce,
Yes I replaced the cutlass bearing on Gran Mariner, my M36. It may be different on the M31/32, but on the M36 there is very little room from the end of the transmission coupling to the prop shaft stuffing box. Therefore, the coupling gets salt water on it. I tried every trick in the book to get the shaft out. Including lubricants, heat, putting a socket in between the engine and transmission coupling and putting longer bolts to tighten and push the shaft out. I finally cut the shaft. The machine shop that removed the coupling from the shaft, said it took 12 tons of pressure to push it out.
I installed a new 1 1/4" stainless shaft with an american taper, cutlass bearing and new 3 blade prop.
As I recall there were some hex screws holding the cutlass bearing in. Good luck.

Yikes. Thanks Brian. Hopefully mine will come out easier than that. I do not want to have to replace the shaft, obviously. I will post when I get the job done, and photo document the process.
