Subject: Bobstay/dolphin striker on an M-40

As you are all aware the 40 has a bob stay with a dolphin striker. I am now mooring Tivoli and the mooring line continues to catch on the stay at the striker. Can I remove the dolphin striker and run the stay directly from the end of the bowsprit to the keel. Or would this cause structual issues, I realize it was designed this way for a reason, it's just the issue of the chafe and the potential of knocking the stay off in bad weather. Any help would be appreciated. If I cant, so be it and I will deal with it.

I considered the same change but after researching I learned that the angle of the bobstay and the forestay should be 90 degrees. Removing the dolphin striker will change the angle enough, in my opinion, to weaken the structure enough to risk the rig in high stress situations.

You might try a bridle but not sure if it will work very well. I tried a bridle on a mooring in Avalon without success.

The dolphin striker is probably strong enough to handle the sideways preasure without damage.

Hi, Mike --

We use a sturdy line shackled to the point where the bobstay attaches to the hull when we anchor Ta' Ata Ori. The line attaches to the anchor chain. This avoids hitting the dolphin striker and also lowers the point at which the anchor is attached, so less bucking in the swells. Maybe something like this would work for a mooring buoy, too.

We are just about ready to step our new masts. We went with aluminum, but they are painted spar buff, so they look just like the old wooden masts. But a lot less weight aloft. We are eager to see how she sails with the new masts and a new set of sails, too. Can't wait to put up that mizzen stays'l.

Another technique to consider is running the mooring line through a block (or blocks if you're doubling back) at the end of the bow sprit.

I run my anchor snubbing line this way on Murre with great success. Oddly, I find it has the same dampening effect that Lawrence mentions for his method and also helps to prevent wandering about the anchorage.

Thanks for all the suggestions, we have had some pretty high winds and the stay seems to hold up well. However, I will look into the other possible solution as well.

Lawerence, good luck with the new spars, aluminum will certainly be far easier to work with. Would love to see pics once they are stepped.

Oh, yeah, Mike, we'll be showing her off with the new spars. I'll send you some photos and will also update the web site. In addition to the spars, booms, winches, we're having the bottom completly re-done with epoxy sealer, epoxy reinforcement of rudder, new thru-hulls, bottom paint and such. Replacing old anamometer, knotmeter and depth sounder with the wireless TackTick system. Built and installed a new deck box for the propane tank. All new sails. Whew! Ready for the next 30 years...

Sea Trek has been through 15 named storms and more harsh weather than I care to think about at anchor and we have stressed the bobstay and dolphin striker seriously and they both have stood up like a champ.
