I'm not sure on the 40 but on the 31/32 you can find the hull number on the forward side of the deck beam as you enter the forward cabin. If a 40 follows true to the other Mariners you will find the number in lots of other places to mark parts for specific boats. Pull out a cutting board or a drawer and look on the back or the bottom. I found one on the top of the door to the head.

Beyond what Steve describes, there's another number on Murre of some 10 or 12 digits that's laquered to the inside of the hull inside the hanging locker. Which is to say, hidden.

Though curious, I've never bothered to figure out what it represents. But given it's length, I'd guess that number is also on a yellowing form in some governmental office somewhere.
