Subject: installing a holding tank

I have to install a holding tank in a mariner 31. There is room for the tank but I wasnt sure how the plumbing is ran from the tank to the head and galley. Does the tank need to be below the head? Does the cleanout on the outside of the boat need to be below the tank to drain it. Any info would be very helpful, possibly the plumbing schematics. Thanks

Dude you ask for a lot! :-)

Here's how the holding tank is arranged on Murre, M31 (was installed prior to my acquiring the boat).

Holding tank is hung to the vberth supports from underneath and is about 10 gallons, so it is effectively above the head. The tank is rectangular and is hung vertically.

The tank has four hose connections, all of which come off the tank’s aft facing panel:

1) a small venting hose at top that runs to a small bronze mushroom head in the hull about 6 inches below the hull flange (this so you can create a riser in the hose) in an area roughly adjacent to the head port (window); 2) the inflow from the head connects at top as well, running from the head, under the sink, through the vberth bulkhead and up to the tank; 3) at the bottom of the tank panel is the outflow to the pumpout deck plate located in the deck roughly adjacent to the head port (window); 4) a second outflow hose runs to a through hull that’s been installed under the head sink.

The original through hull aft of the head is no longer used.

This installation works fine though a siphon break should have been installed.

Some boats have the holding tank installed under the most forward section of the starboard salon settee.

Not sure your reference to the galley, but on Murre none of the hosing runs aft of the head.

Ya I do ask for a lot because I have been looking at a few mariners and want to know what im getting myself into before I buy it. This M31 I am seriously looking at buying was never finished by Clair Oberly, I need to install a head and sink, and the other sink in the galley. I have been looking for a chart to look at to get a better understanding. The boat came with a water tank but no holding tank.

Hey, Bryan, hope you know I was just pulling your leg.

The only drawings that have ever been discovered for the M31 (to my knowledge--happy to be wrong) are the profile drawing and the electrical schematic, both on the MOA site.

But it sure never hurts to ask.

Bryan,

Randall is a good person to listen to, I have a Mariner 40, I have learned a tremendous amount from him both directly and indirectly. I know this is a specific task you are focused on, but if you go through the archives you will find lots and lots of information much of it from Randall.

Mariners are fantastic sailboats in my opinion, good luck with yours.
