I've read where Buddy and Sonny Curtis had been listening to black R&B played on Stan's Record Rack radio show from Shreveport, Louisiana, and favourite of theirs was Hank Ballard and The Midnighters who had a series of Annie songs, ‘Work With Me Annie’, ‘Annie Had A Baby’, and ‘Annie’s Aunt Fannie’.
It therefore seemed appropriate for Buddy to record a song written by Nashville songwriter Luke McDaniel (Earl Lee) called ‘Midnight Shift’, a song about a prostitute called Annie.
Does anybody know if Buddy even met Luke, of if Luke or anybody beside Buddy recorded this song around the same time in '56. In fact did Luke get the idea from those Annie songs of Hank's?
