Right Dave, I didn't pick up on that! My thoughts are that cowboys usually hung around in groups - maybe the writer had the same thought in mind - so although not mentioned in the song, perhaps the cowboy he had shot had some mates close by. Alternatively, the cowboy may not have 'cleared leather' which could have caused the shooter problems. Of course, the song would have been quite different if he had not run, and perhaps would not have been written at all! I do think that songs do not always tell clear, obvious and straightforward stories, after all along the way they do have to rhyme!
