Hoffman will never fess up to stealing the tapes. I'd say there's a fair chance he doesn't even have them anymore and sold them to a collector.

On the plus side, Hoffman's sticky fingers were likely the reason we got the absolute goldmine of unreleased recordings in the mid-'90s.

UMG will never make a deal with him, either way. They have forbidden him from working on anything belonging to them for decades now. Word is, Buddy's stuff was far from the only tapes he stole, although it's the most infamous case.

Sadly, Buddy's master tapes just aren't that valuable to UMG anymore. Several of his songs are still quite valuable for licensing purposes, but most of the organisations licensing the songs aren't going to be asking which generation of tape the songs came from. It seems that the last great Buddy revival in the public's eye was in the early '90s, when Buddy: The Musical was doing great business worldwide.
