Celebrating the memory of Bill Griggs, who left this world eleven years ago today.

Anyone who calls themselves a fan of Buddy Holly and The Crickets owes a debt of gratitude to Bill Griggs. Long before the existence of the internet, when researcher was manual and not the click of a mouse, Bill Griggs captured the stories and the emotions of the people who were there during Buddy Holly's incredibly creative but short lifetime.
So many fans today use his work without acknowledging Bill. One thing I know for sure is the internet and its abuse of copyrighted material today would drive him crazy.

Bill Griggs always made time for friends and fans who called him or visited him at home and wanted to know more about Buddy Holly or the Rockin50s era.

Bill was fun and he was intense. The two of us laughed liked brothers and every once in a while, he and I argued like a couple of brothers. One time, an argument went way too far and too personal and we spent a few months without speaking to one another. Then we ran into each another in a hotel lobby. We decided to sit down and discuss our issues, which ultimately turned into another argument. Bill’s wife Sharon, after listening to this for almost two hours, stood up and said, "Would you two just knock it off? You are just alike and both of you know that you have missed each other. So shut up, be friends, and go to bed." Bill and I looked at one another, and suddenly, without another word said, our little standoff was over and our deep friendship was renewed.

There was love and mutual respect between us. I am a better music fan for having known Bill Griggs. Eleven years later, I still miss him every day and so do so many other people.

Bill Griggs was a world-class music fan, historian, and researcher. He was also one of the best friends that Buddy Holly never met.

Rest In Peace mi amigo.
