marilyn is right on! even if the mother is not abusing the boy physically, she is torturing him emotionally. he may indeed turn on her or go columbine at school. btw, to answer the original question, "no, i would not lock my child in the basement." this boy obviously preferred sitting in the rain to sitting in the basement.
