I agree, the quality of the show this year isn't very impressive. But this isn't a sudden drop off from high quality writing. The show is barely any worse than it was last year, or even the year before. This show has always presented unrealistc plotlines in the most melodramatic ways possible. The gems of this series are indidvidual episodes when the writers actually hit on realistic topics, such as the episode about the student who was being sexually abused by her father, or the one about Senate's relationship with a student dying of cancer. But aside from the few episodes like these, I don't think you can call any of the older seasons any more realistic than this one. The Hook Lady, for example. Give me a break, that went on waaay too long. The biggest flaw of the show, I believe, is actually not the writing, but the fact that key characters are being dropped whithout explanation and new ones being added each season. How much better could the show be if we continued to watch Lauren Davis or Harry Senate grow as teachers? And this year they got rid of the two characters who were new last year. Characters and plotlines of this show in general get dropped way too abruptly and without follw up. As for the new writers, I don't think they're any worse than the old ones, and maybe they'll even be able to think of a fresh formula to save this show. I'm not giving up on it just yet.
