Subject: Comparing Notes

Last night I took the time to listen to some cds that I have of the Strange Medicine band in concert, as compared to Journey in concert doing the same Classic Journey material. This is what I concluded from my comparison.

Journey, for the most part, did studio quality renditions of their latest album. For instance, the quality of the performance of Lights was nearly perfect at first, but became less true to the recording as the years progressed from the time of the Infinity album.

In some cases the FTLOSM version of some of the songs was better than Journey's own. For instance, I listened to a recording of a concert on New Years Eve 1986/87 in direct comparison to the FTLOSM concert in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Anyone who has these two bootlegs can prove this to themselves, but the Strange Medicine band performed the songs that were common to both concerts better than Journey did.

Moyes' drum work on Somewhere There's Hope in the New Brunswick concert is phenominal. I'm a fan of Steve Smith, but he never did anything better than Moyes did in this concert, and Lincoln Brewster managed to be EXRAORDINARY on lead guitar without being obnoxious about it.
