Subject: different approach

Hi Ladies!

First I want to say I am so sorry that everyone is having such a hard time with these dumb steriods. I hate them too. I just saw my DO today and he has okay'd me to start reducing but very carefully. He is trying something interesting with me that I have not heard anyone mention. He is giving me a small amount of Cortef (hydrocortisone). He says that helps the adrenal cortex and helps the withdrawal symptoms of weaning. I am to take 2.5 mg at 7 am and 2.5 mg at 2-3pm - that's apparently when the adrenals kick in and they Cortef will help give me an extra boost as I withdraw the medrol. Has anyone heard of this or tried it? I am willing to try anything once. He says that it works well for some and not so well for others, so all I can do is try and see what happens. Also, he has given my 5-htp which is a neurotransmitter. It has really helped me sleep well and has really smoothed out my moods swings. I was totally amazed at how well I did through the stress of my Dad's open heart surgery last week. I of course, have scarring in my small airways which is most probably permanent. This DO thinks he can help me get more lung function, but I will never be "normal", but anything more would help. I will let you all know if the Cortef really helps with reducing. It's cheap and if it helps it might be worth asking your doctors. Remember though that my doctor is alternative and most mainstream docs. are not really into alternative meds. I will keep you all posted. I take Cortef 2 days before I start my wean. I will try going down 1 mg. every 7 days if I can handle it. He is not on any set schedule. He wants me to do what I can handle. If it takes all summer to get off this stuff then that what it takes, but I am going to go for it.

I am praying for all of you and wish you good days ahead.

God Bless! Karen
