Hi Bill.
I am so sorry to hear about what has happened to your mother. I am not a doctor but I will do my best to help. First off let your mom know that what the steroid has done will reverse in time. How long the steroid takes to leave the system is
not precise. Since she was only on it for a week it should not take much longer. Over 30 millg. shows more side-effects. The joint pain can be reduced by drinking more water. She may need medicine for steroid pychosis (hallucinations).
The chronic fatigue is common but it too should reverse unless there is an underlying illness not related to the steroid. Have they checked her
thyroid? corticoseroids are a stress hormone and
depression from illness is undertandable add the steroid and it would be a surprise if she were not depressed. But each time she gets upset her body creates "cortisol" another stress hormone
which may be prolonging the steroid withdrawal her body is going through. Go to the "FAQ" section of our website to get more information. You can find a list of steroid Side-effects on another page. The doctor may not want to admit her steroid side-effects because he gave her the steroid and that would be admitting he caused this. By law he should have warned her of the steroid and it's possible adverse effects (the pharmacy should have too). Find another doctor! an Endocrinologist may understand better.
I am 57 and started this nonprofit over a decade ago after I suffered side-effects from a steroid
medication that I was not told was a steroid. The cortisol test can be unreliable as the steroid leaves the body.I hope this info helps.Your mom is lucky to have a loving son like you. If you need to, you can email me directly.
Best wishes to you and your Mom
