I am so sorry to hear about your daughter's condition. he should have never been given steroids. Some atrophy requires surgery. If hers continues to get bigger for example from the size of a dime to quarter than it is still progressing
There is a picture of a girl's thigh who was a teena`ger when given a shot of the same steroid your daughter was given. The picture was taken a year fter her injection (given for allergies) and her atrophy required surgery. Don't show your daughter he picture. She doesn't need to see it if she is depressed it could make it wosre. The emotional problems usually subside but if she continues to see side effects than the emotional effects would be had to get through. I suggest going to the picture and reading what is below it.Also, find the posts on the new and old messageboard concerning atrophy from kenalog injection. If she has muscle cramping, drinking 8 glasses of water can reduce them. You can help your daughter by explaining what is happening to her and letting her know that one way or another she will be okay. The atrophy is caused when the injection
is not admnistered properly. This seems to happen more with Kenalog injections. If the shot is given too close to the surface it causes atrophy of the skin. If given too deep it can cause atrophy of the muscle. If the atrophy od the skin continues to get bigger (take pictures to keep a record) it can go deeper to the muscle which is why it would require cosmetic surgery to stop the progresson of the atrophy. It could be that the atrophy has aleady stopped and won't get any worse. This is what I am hoping. Steroids produce the stress hormone cortisol so she needs to do things that make her happy and stress can be reduced by doing simple things she may enjoy. petting a pet, reading a book,watching a movie, listening to songs she likes. Even 10 minutes of distraction can change her focus and interupt the depressive thoughts.She must be made aware that she needs to recognize when her thoughts or mood are dark or depressive. Only she can control that part and it is a very important part of her healing emotionally and physically. I hope this info helps.
