Usually, the steroid in an IV is decadron or solumedrol. Depending on the dosage, they can make pred look wimpy! The side effects they provide can be worse than oral pred. Unfortunately they also have a better chance of saving your life; it's a trade off. I spent alot of time on IV decadron as well as pred. I'm not allowed to take either again because of the damage they caused. The upside is that I am writing this; I should never have left the hospital in an upright position. One of the things I live with is a damaged trachea. The mega steroids and coughing fits damaged the cartiledge in my trach. When I exhale my trach almost collapses on itself. It lost the rigidity to keep it open. It has improved with a non-steroid life, but it won't be normal again. IV steroids go thoughout the body through the bloodstream. I think they could "settle" and damage any body part. The good news is that some damage can be temporary. Hope this helps.
