A1c isn't at all a valid diagnostic test because it's an average; you could be running very high and very low and come out fine. It's only validity is as a measure of bg control in diabetics.

Anything after meals above 105 is not normal, though they call it that. Anything for even a moment over 140 is doing permanent cellular damage to kidneys, eyes, arteries, nerve cells and pancreas.

Whatever works for you, as long as you are proactive and don't take any doc's word for what is normal or healthy.
