Rivers of Blood

1
The wind’s soft caress hardens
Like bony fingers
Seeking their stranglehold
On a shrouded corpse.

2.
The moon glimmers cold
Casting shadows
Across a graveyard
Revealing recent mounds.

3.
The air smells foul
Heavy with rotting flesh
Thick smoke lingers cloying
Blackening the sky of death.

4.
Wash yourselves clean
In the rivers of spent blood
Leaving myths behind
Along with future hope.

5.
The puzzled kites
Leave their nests of bones
To paddle in the mounds
And search for appetisers.

6.
Death’s fingers extend
Caress the swollen belly
Weave the tiny shroud
For the graven womb.
