Hi Harmony,
Al rambles a lot sometimes, but he is usually there or thereabouts with his critiques.
I admired your great poem 'The Devils Maid'and that is the problem I think Al is refering to. You are obviously capable of some great work and we,(wrongly), expect the same depth and brilliant usage of words everytime.
I think what he is saying is that he doesnt need to outline exactly what he thinks is wrong with this poem, as you being a good poet will already know it's not up to your very high standard.
Al and Raphaela are in an unenviable position, they feel they have to comment, whereas most of us if we don't like something just pass it by.
I for one do not want Al and Raphaela just to say this is good or that is good when it clearly isn't. - Especially with any of my poems.
However vague the critism is, and it is sometimes (Al), at least it makes one look at ones work and strive to improve.
I applaud Al for the 1 or 2 real critisms he has made recently. Why should he say it's good when he doesn't think it is?
What he was saying about this poem of yours, I think, was that the whole feel of it was not up to your usual very high standard, that your writing has moved on to another height, he is inviting you to critique it yourself, he seems to think you will know where it's wrong. As we usually do. But it's the ability to read it as others will and learn from our faults.
I hope this doesn't put you off posting on Unicorn as I for one look forward to your poetry.
I also hope this doesn't put Al off from critiquing properly and not just saying how good everything is.
Now I'm rambling !!!!

Gem.

>Does she complain that her depth exceeds
>The modest length of your dearest deeds?
>Does she conspire to whisper rank and low,
>That your most wanton rhythm is too slow?

>Does she protest that your erudition
>Be more agile than sublime position?
>Does she denounce with vitriolic spice
>Your laying down so soon the sweetest price?

>Does she decry with bitter, angry prose
>Your entrance swift into deep repose?
>If she does, give her this thought to savor:
>Love's noble pleasure loses its flavor
>When thus sentenced to suffer hard labor.
