*She was anxious to ride him, as she hadn't in a while. With the move and all, she hadn't had time! She quickly led him to the center of the arena. She made him do all of his ground exercises. He turned on his hind and front end (360 degrees both ways), side pass and back. She then gently mounted him and had him do these exercised again in the saddle. She was ready to begin.
With a quick brush of her foot to his barrel, he moved into a walk. She worked a series of circles with him, trying to use nothing but her legs in guidance. To turn to the left, she pushed her right foot forward and her left foot back emphasizing the pressure and making him turn around her inside foot. She did vice versa for the right turn. They hadn't been working on this long, and he was starting to come around. Her initial goal was to be able to Rein with no head guidance. After they had walked a bit she gently touched his barrel and clicked to him once. He immediatly floated into a smooth trot.
They worked more circles and did some rail work at the trot. They had even started to learn turning on the front end. This was a bit more confusing to him, so it was taking a bit longer. He already had very similar signals for turning on the hind. He was trying to remember which was which now. She worked a few cones in the trot as well. Once she was satisfied that he had been worked well going to the right and left, she cheaked all of his transitions. For the most part they were flawless, but from the stop to a trot he was a tad rusty and after a few simple exercies on this, all of his transitions were very good. When he was younger, she emphasized this so readily, that they are mostly perfect.
She then worked the canter for a while. She worked him on the rail and in tight circles at the canter. She did several flying lead changes, and a few sliding stops. He was rusty on his roll backs to begin with, but soon came around. She worked variations of speed and did a few spins for the last major part of the exercise.
She cooled him down by walking him around the arena. He was a bit hot and as always was sweating. The indoor arena, although it was nice, didn't help on keeping him from sweating. She finished by doing the side passing, turning on hind end, and backing. She dismounted happy with the success of their ride on this particular day.*
