The surprise he had planned on the end of their drive would no doubt pale in comparison to those few soft-spoken words exchanged between two long-time lovers. One with an unearthly patient love, the other with a whirlwind attention span and fear of committment. Perhaps two extremes balanced each other out. Made a better whole? Though were he to consider that idea, he would have doubted the benefits of what contributions he would bring to the partnership.
But nevermind the inevitable flaws, nevermind tomorrow's challenges, yesterday's regrets... He wasn't perfect. She knew that all too well. She accepted him anyway and he knew it in her silence. And the look in her eyes -everlasting affection, unshaken devotion, a joy he had never seen in anyone's soul- sent a thrill through him that seemed to ring through the deepest, darkest, forgotten corners of his heart.
Did everyone feel so... alive when having found and spoken promises to the one person they could clutch beloved to their heart? She would keep him? Through their immortality? Now was not the time to question why, nor did he really need to. She trusted him even with his flaws and that was the first true sanctuary he had ever known. Please don't make him leave it.
Too moved even to purr through the press of her lips to his, throat tightened and chest threatening to burst with the swell of something beautiful that almost hurt, he read her answer a hundred times over in the moment. And could have cried were he not too blissfully happy to give in to tears. Shifting to cup each of the angel's cheeks with reverent hands as she spoke words he had never before had a desire to hear, he drank in her kiss.
And handed his soul over to her to her keeping, to mend perhaps, to patch the holes and even the tatters, to love as she must please please keep loving him!
Trembling without a thought to stifle the quiver of softer emotions, no need to do so before her eyes, he touched careful kisses to her radiant features, fingers still soft within her hair, words still whispered to her alone. "You are beautiful, GiGi... The only truly beautiful person I have ever known... Thank you. For loving me."
