Subject: Why did Hitler despise the treaty of versailles?

1. You can read why the German people hated the Treaty at:
<a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.johndclare.net/peace_treaties5.htm,">http://www.johndclare.net/peace_treaties5.htm,</a>
and Hitler shared this hatred. He would have been particularly angry at the clauses which gave German land and people to other countries (eg Poland), and at the military clauses which left Germany at the mercy of the smaller countries round about, whose peoples he felt were raciall inferior.

2. Also, he had particular personal reaons to hate the Treaty. During the First World War he had fought the British, and was twice wounded in a gas attack. It was while he was recovering in hospital from the second of these that he heard about the Armistice, and he describes in Mein Kampf how he wept, and vowed to bring to justice the 'November criminals' whom, he felt, had betrayed his country. Mein Kampf was written in 1924, after the war, and had the benefit of hindsight, but many German soldiers felt that way at the time, and there is no reasons why Hitler should not be telling the truth about his feelings.

3. A major reason Hitler hated the Treaty was that it CONSTRAINED Germany. The Treaty was designed to stop Germany going to war again, and Hitler wanted to go to war. He wanted Germany to grow and take over lebensraum in the east.

4. It is possible, and many historians would agree with this, that Hitler was using his scorn for the Versailles Treaty as a smoke-screen for his political ambition. He KNEW that was what the German people wanted to hear, and so he hated the Treaty simply because it gained him support.

5. Most of all, however, Hitler hated the Treaty because it was the symbol of Germany's defeat in the First World War and he - like many German people - simply did not believe that Germany had been defeated. He (and they) believed that the German Army had been 'stabbed in the back' and wanted another war to give Germany what he saw as a rightful victory.
