Subject: Why did Hitler despise the treaty of versailles?

There are many reasons why Hitler despised the Treaty Of Versailles. But one of the main ones is due to his own persoanl belief that Germany was betrayed. In short, the German government arranged an armistice against the knowledge of the soldiers. The soldiers couldn't understand why this was the case. After all, they hadn't lost any ground, and were in fact gaining it as the war had carried on. If Germany had carried on with the war, they would've lost more men, but they would've eventually won. Rumours quickly spread, and it was the common belief amongst the soldiers and indeed, many people back in Germany, that the country had been 'stabbed in the back' by unpatriotic and weak politicians (Communists and Jews). These people were refered to as the 'November Criminals'

Originally, Europe was divided as to what they should do about Germany. Britain wanted the punishment to be lenient, so that Germany could help rebuild its economy. France on the other hand, wanted revenge. Revenge for all the men they had lost, and all the land that had been destroyed by the war. Much of Germany was repossesed under the Treaty, including the Rhineland, that was won by the German's in an earlier conflict, and was now turned into a de-militarised zone. Many area's of Germany were cut away, and some areas were even seperated from Germany, such as the newly formed state of Czechoslovakia, and the port of Danzig, both now under control of the League of Nations.

Hitler was always an opportunist, as well as an organised leader, as his moves on German foreign policy after he became President in 1932 (the remilitarising of the Rhineland, The invasion of Austrian and Czechoslovakia) and the Treaty of Versailles may well have provided him with the political platform he needed to make his views heard.
