As you have correctly pointed out, the reality of the situation was not known at the time. Chamberlain was a man living with the very real memories of the fighting during World War I and was determined to do everything possible to prevent another war.

His actions, through our viewpoint now, do appear misguided and inappropriate, but when you attempt to understand the position he was in, we can begin to appreciate them.

The delay in war that appeasement resulted in did also give us time to improve weapons and military production, something which Chamberlain is rarely given credit for. He was, after all, also the man who declared war on Germany.
