i dont know the ins and out of whats happening with iraq at the moment like other people here and so i cant really form a blind opinion on whether there should be or shouldnt be a war. but i too cant help feeling slightly dubious about the whole issue as anonymous mentions America's track records in world affairs and * illustration of America's hypocricy (is that how you spell it?)when it comes to matters such as democracy. It does seem that when it suits them, "the ideals of independence" are thrown out the window, and the only reason the Mujahideen got US support was because they weren't Soviet. And so their damantion of Iraq's regime is hypocritical as the US HELPED install the taliban.

BUT US support of the Mujahideen is partly justified becuase at the time, the US had to defeat the Greater evil (communism) at whatever cost. And if this meant supporting the lesser evil, then so be it. After all life would have been equally miserable and repressive under communism.

What was wrong however was the US announcing to the world they were helping a fight for "freedom and independence" when they knew this not to be true. Instead, the US could have been more truthful and let the world know that both sides were bringing a regime to the country and it was a matter of supporting the one that had less expansionist motives. Supporting the Mujahideen to simply contain communism would have been reason enough to help them.

* also does have a valuable point though about the transformation of freedom fighters to terrorists. when the mujahideen were blowing up bits of the soviet and killing innocent soviet people it was indeed freedom fighting and they were financially supported in it. As soon as they turn Anti American, they are terrorists. Surely just the killing of innocent civilians is terrorism whatever the case. I feel that the US should stop drawing the line between what is terrorism and what is freedom fighting and tackle ALL groups who are a danger to the public. From the IRA to the Al Quaida. Otherwise, the "crusade against terrorism" is empty. But then again, it is a matter of the greater evil and at this moment in time, the Al-quaida is definately a greater evil than the IRA. Still i feel its wrong for the US to fight this war whilst still funding the IRA. I am not aying the US ahould wage war on the IRA too, only to stop actively supporting it.

Despite all of America's faults though, I do bleieve that Iraq would be a better place without Saddam as long as what happened in Afganistan isnt repeated.
