Unfortunately we live in an age where image takes over from substance. The postmodern nightmare. So long as people can group together and dress in funny ways and purport to be nonconformist, the music is of little significance.
Thankfully The Living End offer a proper musical alternative and it annoys me when people refer to their music as punk.

Billie Joe is a talented songwriter and has a genuine appreciation for music. His songs may be minimalist, but he does have the occasional tendency to whip out a damn good catchy tune. This is why it really pisses me off when you get Blink 182 and the Sum 41 who try to undermine the whole point and attitude of punk music. All this watered-down hype and juvenile humility about wanting to "fuck a dog in the ass" really makes me cringe.
Green Day are the only modern punk band I can think off who don't have an inflated ego. If only they arrived on the scene ten years earlier than they did...
