I did have the expander itself a year before I before I had the surgery. The expansion did not work on me because my suture had already fused together I was 26. On my seventh day of turning the key I experienced SEVERE pain (major pain killers had no effect on the pain) and I had to have the expander taken out. It was suggested to me that I should go on with treatment without fixing the crossbite. When I moved to a new area of the country my new doctor recommened the surgery and I did it. I hear that there is a very high relapse rate for those patients that use the expander alone. I am not sorry I did what I did. I know that I'd be upset if my crossbite relapsed after all the time and money I have spent fixing it. I have figured that including everything in the treatment my total cost is going to be around the $15,000 range...It is not worth the risk to me.
