I caught a Dr. Phil show the other day and he had referred someone to the Extreme Makeover show, but only after talking with that person extensively and concluding that the person was doing it for the right reasons -- that she wasn't thinking "if only I was physically beautiful, then I'll feel good about myself," but rather, "I'm feeling great about myself and I deserve for my outside to look as good as I feel on the inside." I think the Extreme Makeover show has a counseling component too to address the same question, though they don't play it up much.

I'm fixing my lower teeth for oral health reasons because they're so dang crowded they're impossible to keep clean and the roots are getting closer and closer together, endangering the long term health of the gums. The upper teeth, I'll admit, are more of an aesthetic thing since I'm tired of photos where I'm smiling and my rotated incisors poke into my lower lip and make them look more prominent than they really are (:^B) That's what sent me to the dentist to ask about how to make them look better in the first place, even I think the idea of making physical cosmetic improvements goes against the grain for a lot of us guys. I argued with myself over messing with what God and my family genetics gave me, but then I comb my hair to make it look straighter and more presentable -- why shouldn't I keep my teeth straight too? As long as I don't feel like I need straight teeth to make me feel good about myself, I'm pretty comfortable with my decision.
