I feel strongly that it is my responsibility to take care of my health. I follow recommended guidelines for this in exercise, in nutrition, etc.--and now in dental health. If I do not get braces, it is likely that I will lose my teeth at some point; if I get braces, I will probably save my teeth. Where to draw the line between function and cosmetics is not for me to do.

Cosmetic surgery (plastic surgery) actually got its start in WWI with the repair of functionality to those who were mangled and torn, but still living, from battle. I am not much of a TV person, so have not seen the show you refer to; probably would revolt me too.
